I am currently completing my second year at university as a Media and Popular Culture student, one of my university modules required a placement and I chose Host Nottingham as the organisation to partake this with. I have learnt so much more than I expected whilst working in the Refugee Forum and my eyes were opened to things I never thought I would see and realise.
One thing that really stuck out to me was hearing how great host’s found their experience when hosting. Every single host that I spoke to had nothing but positive stories to tell, I realised through this that hosting does not have to be as daunting as you might expect it to be. I noticed particularly how enriching to your own life hosting can be, I spoke with a host who shared stories of how the woman she hosted cooked delicious meals that originated in her country. They were able to share with each other something as important and homely as cooking and food. Hosting can teach you so much more than you might first anticipate and you might even learn some things about yourself along the way. Not only are you taking a massive weight off of somebody else’s shoulders but you are also allowing yourself to improve as a person.
One particular hosting family that I spoke to hosted two young sisters from Bangladesh, the family hosting had two young girls also. When I spoke to one of the hosting family members, Rachael who is 18, like one of the sisters from Bangladesh, I was surprised to learn how similar they were to another despite growing up in different countries and having different cultural norms. This made me realise that at the end of the day we are all human and we are all so similar in a multitude of ways. I think that teenagers in particular are so alike regardless of where we live or where come from or what language we primarily speak. Rachael told me that when her family hosted the sisters they would sit and watch reality TV shows like Take Me Out and they would all enjoy it just as much as she would. And they would laugh at the same jokes and at the end of the day; they were just two teenage girls enjoying themselves. Because we are all human, and we all the same at the core.
If you are considering hosting and want to help somebody in need but are worried it might be too challenging, just bear in mind that a challenge can also be a great thing. You must also remember that it will not be as intimidating as you might think and you might be surprised by the similarities between you and the person you are hosting.
